Power Rangers Get a Facelift in New Teaser Trailer
By Devvon Eubanks
“It’s Morphin’ Time!” This phrase brings back so many memories from one of the most memorable shows of the '90s, the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. These enhanced teenagers from Angel Grove High School were a team like no other, fighting the evil Rita Repulsa and her army of minions. The show also spawned numerous sequels, competitive spin-offs (like VR Troopers and Big Bad Beetleborgs), and of course, movies. It's been almost a decade since the Rangers have had their last silver screen appearance and it was uncertain if they would ever come back…until now.
Simply titled “Power Rangers,” the teaser for a new movie was recently released, and it is quite interesting. In the new trailer, the bright colors, campy one-liners, and over-the-top action of the older series is replaced with a darker and more serious tone. The new Rangers are still teenagers, but they appear to be more mischievous, gritty, and battle-hardened than their '90s counterparts. On top of that, the new Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks of “The Hunger Games” series) is a much more menacing villain, giving this series a bit of new life with a modern twist.
But while the trailer was a fantastic introduction to the new team and style, more questions still remain for fans. Is Rita the only villain who appears in this movie? What about her minions, like Goldar and the fighting Putty Patrol? And will the iconic mechanical “Megazord” make an appearance, too? As these new details come, hopefully the hype will continue, and viewers will get a taste of the morphin’ magic again when “Power Rangers” hits theaters on March 24, 2017.
